This is a problem that acoustic treatment solves, and it is more common across Muscat’s restaurant scene than most operators realise. The buildings are often designed with finishes that look premium but sound terrible.
Why Restaurants Get So Loud
The acoustic issue in most restaurants is reverberation combined with hard surfaces. When a room fills with people, everyone speaks at a level to be heard over background noise. The background noise includes everyone else doing exactly the same thing. The more people, the louder it gets, in a self reinforcing loop.
In a room with long reverberation, sound from every table hangs in the air and adds to the general noise level. A busy restaurant in a modern building in Muscat, with polished marble floors, painted plaster ceilings, and glass facades, might have a reverberation time of three seconds or more when empty. Fill it with diners and kitchen noise and it becomes genuinely difficult to have a conversation.
What the Research Shows
Noise consistently appears in customer feedback as a reason for not returning to a restaurant. It ranks alongside slow service and poor food in terms of impact on repeat visits. This is not a preference issue affecting a small group of customers. It affects most people above a certain age and all customers in groups having conversations. A restaurant that loses repeat visits due to noise is losing revenue that acoustic treatment could recover.
Staff are affected as well. Working in a loud kitchen and then a loud dining room for an eight hour shift is physiologically stressful. Turnover in the hospitality sector in Oman is a real issue, and working environment quality is a factor. Acoustic improvement has measurable effects on both customer experience and staff retention.
Solutions for Different Restaurant Types
The approach depends on the design and use of the space. A casual cafe in Madinat Sultan Qaboos with an exposed concrete ceiling has different options than a fine dining restaurant in a hotel in the CBD. In both cases, the goal is reducing reverberation to a level where normal conversation is possible at adjacent tables without raising voices.
For spaces with high or exposed ceilings, suspended acoustic baffles are the most practical intervention. They can be integrated with the lighting design and suspended at varying heights for a designed look. On a practical level, they absorb sound on both faces and reduce reverberation without requiring any wall modification. In a leased space where a restaurateur cannot alter walls or floors, baffles are often the only available tool and they are effective.
For restaurants with more control over the interior design, a combination of ceiling treatment, upholstered seating, textile wall elements, and carpeted zones in relevant areas can bring reverberation down significantly. Each of these elements absorbs some sound. Together, the cumulative effect is substantial. The room does not need to become dead. It just needs to be controlled enough that voices do not linger.
Kitchen Noise Separation
The kitchen is a significant noise source that most restaurant acoustic plans underaddress. Pass through hatches, ventilation ducts, and lightweight partition walls between kitchen and dining areas allow substantial sound transmission. The clatter and extraction fan noise from a busy kitchen adds to the baseline level in the dining room and reduces the perceived quality of the experience.
Acoustic sealing of openings and appropriate treatment of the partition between kitchen and dining area can reduce this transmission. In new fit outs, specifying an acoustic rated door to the kitchen instead of a standard one makes an immediate difference. In existing restaurants, adding door seals and treating the duct openings achieves a meaningful reduction.
